Cambridge Rotary's Bruised Brothers Band
Back in 2005 some Cambridge Rotary Club Rotarians who shared a love of the 60's and 70's Rock and Roll music from that era which they grew up in, decided to form a band - The Bruised Brothers Band.
Over the years the band has become well known in the community, playing their music to local Rest Home Social Clubs, other service Clubs, community and special functions, Conferences, birthday functions and street markets. The band plays for a contribution which is part of Rotary's fundraising efforts supporting other groups and organisations within the Cambridge and wider community.
The band members enjoy playing covers from many bands of that era, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cliff Richards, The Shadows, Van Morrison and many other bands.
We have fun playing the music we all grew up with and love, we welcome any inquiry.
Roger Hill - Lead guitar, vocals
Roger is the band's lead guitarist, has a great love of 60's and 70's rock music and has a passion for The Beatles and The Shadows bands and their music. Roger is our 'driver', likes to 'get it right'. Roger adds to the vocals to give The Bruised Brothers Band our unique style and sound. Roger is a director of the company he and wife Ann established originally in Cambridge, now based in Hamilton
John Bullick - Rythm guitar, vocals
John is another key member of the Bruised Bros Band, singing great harmonies and giving strong backing with his guitar playing. John, a former teacher and headmaster brings all his skills to the band a great team player...
John has been known to imitate a saxophone when Colin has not been available. Talent to burn...
Colin Davis - Saxophonist, Clarinetist, Tin Whistle, Harmonicas, Drums
Colin has oodles of musical talent - a remarkable musician and songwriter, always adds something special to our music. Colin has been playing for many a year and played in other groups past...
Colin was previously involved locally in the dairy industry as a dairy co-op secretary/treasurer.
Billy Wilson - Vocals
Bill is our Crooner - pretty handy with any style of song, has a wonderful voice and keeps us all in trim. Known to start a song in an unknown key which has the rest of us scrambling but always delivers the goods!
Bill is known to every good lady in town (in the nicest way!), spends his work hours doing renovation work for which he is keenly sought after by all and sundry!
Bill is a very handy man...
Greg Gascoigne - Bass Guitar
Greg is the bloke at the back of the Bruised Bros alongside the drums plucking away at the bass guitar - all part of the 'rythmn section'. Greg works with the knowledge that the bass guitar gives the band balls.
Greg is a retired dairy farmer, these days having the 'odd' hobby of making guitars - among other things - back home in his manshed!
Alan van Niekerk - Vocals, Rythmn Guitar, Bass Guitar
Alan recently joined the band to provide backup to the rhythm section.
Alan's key influence is the finger picking style of Merle Travis and Chet Atkins but the more he plays with the band, the more he becomes a Rock'n'roller.
Alan was given his first guitar at the age of 16 and was taught to play ballads and the odd Neil Young hit by his older cousin. Many years later and Alan says, still learning, The Bruised Brothers has brought new life to his skills.
Greg has also inspired Alan to try his hand at the odd bit of guitar building at home in the garage! (It's catching, Alan!)
Kim Pritchard - Vocals, 12 String Guitar
Kim took up the guitar at the age of 9 and has been playing and singing in bands ever since.
In High School he was a member of the Young Internationals that toured Asia spreading good will through music and dance. It was hearing the wonderful charitable music of the Bruised Brothers that initially attracted Kim to join Rotary and the journey since has been very fulfilling - on both personal and community levels. Kim has built many guitars and brings the harmonics of his 12 string guita along with the vocal harmonies to the Bruised Brothers Band.
Nigel Donne - Drums
Inspired by Charlie Watts, Keith Moon and Ringo, Nigel was discovered by talent scout Roger Hill.
Nigel was tapped into lost skills developed from his High School days in the '60's when Nigel was a member of a school Rock band where he played both drums and rythmn guitar.
Nigel likes to tap out a good beat on the drums and is enjoying developing his skills playing the bongo's.
Shona Devoy - Vocals
The Bruised Brothers are delighted to welcome the talented Shona to our line-up!
Shona recently joined the team following Robyn's moving to Pauanui to live, providing the band's back-up vocals.
Shona loves singing and being part of the band. Shona is a proud wife, mother, 'grandie' and aunt!
Shona is, and has been, involved in the trustee industry for 40 plus years.
